Happy Halloween!  Have a great time celebrating this evening.

Language Arts: Today we read for 20 minutes and discussed some traditions of Halloween.

Homework: 
  • Read for 20 minutes

Word Study:  Students took their first spelling test.  The test and homework were returned to them today if they turned everything in on time.  They will receive a new packet next Monday.

Grammar:  grammar packets were given out today.  6th grade has a review packet that is due on THURSDAY.  6th grade will have a parts of speech test on Monday.

5th Grade received a NOUN packet and it is due on Monday.
                    
Social Studies: No class today.
Homework:

  • Sign up for parent teacher conferences.  They are on Wednesday, November 16th and Thursday, November 17th.

Today the kids worked hard on making sure they are all up to date with their assignments. My grade book will be closing on next Wednesday since the marking period ends next Friday.

Language Arts:
Today we worked on a written response questions to the novel Flying Solo that we have been reading aloud in class.  The students also turn in their “small moment” writing piece.

Homework: 
  • Read for 20 minutes

Word Study:  Today we began our first unit in word study for spelling.  Each child has been placed in a word study category based upon an assessment they took a few weeks ago. They are bringing home a packet today explaining the lessons that they are to complete daily for word study.  Their first spelling test will be next Monday.

  • Word study packet
  • Study for test on Monday, October 31st

                    
Social Studies: Took Lesson 4 test today.
Homework: No homework this weekend

We will be making our own Halloween-themed piñatas out of recycled materials--no buying one in a store!  Look at things you would normally throw out at home like boxes, newspapers, packing materials, bags, etc.  Be creative!  Think about how you can reuse your found trash items to make a “recycled”piñata for the Halloween party!You may fill your piñata with whatever PEANUT-FREE, individually-wrapped goodies you would like!  Piñatas can have a pull-string to open or just traditional paper mache all over to be “broken into” –check with your teacher to see if he/she has a preference.  Paper mache can be made using thinned school glue/water or thinned corn starch/water.  Make sure to incorporate a secure hanging mechanism (of recycled material).  The Halloween piñata is an optional at-home project for all 5/6 students.  Bring finished piñatas to school the week of October 24-28.  We will elect the winning piñatas within our 5/6 teams before we have the fun of breaking them open at the Halloween party on Monday, October 31.

Just wanted to let you know that I will be at a reading meeting tomorrow afternoon. I will be in the building if I am needed.

Language Arts:
We went to the media center and worked on our small moment writing piece. We also had an opportunity to check out books

Homework: 
  • Read for 20 minutes
  • Criterion writing piece on a character we would invite to dinner.  Due on Friday
  • Small moment final piece due on Friday. Must be printed and have rubric attached. Also it needs to be on the wiki.

We did a writing/reading stamina activity.  They had to write one full page in their writing notebook and have to write a one page summary on what they have read in their reader’s notebook.
Book Club Launch!  We introduced our Independence book club to the entire 5/6 team. The children are coming home with a book club order form.  They are to choose a book that interests them and matches their reading level.

Homework:  Read for 20minutes
  • Complete reading/writing for stamina assignment.
